The North Fork Complex was comprised of several fires resulting from an August 1, 2009 lightning storm. The fires are located in or adjacent to the North Fork John Day Wilderness, 15 miles southeast of Ukiah, OR. Most of the fires were contained and controlled within the first week. Two fires remained a challenge due to poor access and steep, difficult terrain.

The Complex received significant precipitation August 6 and 7, and again on August 12 and 13, slowing fire progression for a short time. A long-term suppression strategy was developed and implemented on the North Fork Complex fires for firefighter safety and cost containment.

A warming and drying trend towards the end of August and into mid-September increased fire behavior, burning the two fires together and producing, abundant smoke in the valley. October's cooler temperatures and extended periods of precipitation significantly reduced the fires behavior. The combined size of the two fires is estimated at 13,835 acres. The fire has been declared controlled and contained.
